“4 years, 11 months, 5 days…” This is the time lapse during the Second World War between the first and the last day of the German armies presence in Dunkirk, where a whole population was trapped, surrounded and housebound in a ruined city…
Between earth and sky
It is perhaps because she grew up in the countryside that the artist Chantal Vey pays detailed attention to minute things, to beings, to speech, to landscapes. Her work is part of the necessary slowing down that supports exchanges and, trust building, that allows us to fully comprehend a place. Photography comes after a long time of getting acquainted. Sometimes it is necessary for her to retrace her steps, to walk through a place again to find the story and ist timing again, as inscribed in her memory, to capture the trace of it, to reveal its existence. She walks between earth and sky, gradually building up her patient writing of the world. It is for this very particular approach that we asked her to create a photographic journey through “memory-laden” places. These places are in a way the silent witnesses of the territory’s history.
“4 ans, 11 mois, 5 jours…” Voilà le temps écoulé entre le premier et le dernier jour de présence des armées allemandes à Dunkerque, durant la Seconde guerre mondiale, où toute une population fut prise au piège, encerclée et assignée à résidence dans une ville en ruines…
Entre terre et ciel
C’est peut-être parce qu’elle a grandi à la campagne que l’artiste Chantal Vey garde une attention précise aux choses infimes, aux êtres, à la parole, aux paysages. Son travail s’inscrit dans la lenteur nécessaire à l’échange, à l’installation de la confiance, à l’appréhension des lieux. La photographie arrive après un long temps d’approche. Parfois, il lui faut revenir sur ses pas, parcourir à nouveau l’espace pour retrouver le temps du récit inscrit dans sa mémoire, en capturer la trace, en révéler l’existence.
Elle marche entre terre et ciel, construisant peu à peu sa patiente écriture du monde. C’est pour cette approche si particulière que nous lui avons demandé de créer un parcours photographique sur des lieux “porteurs de mémoire”. Ces lieux sont, en quelque sorte, les témoins muets de l’histoire du territoire.
